Unraveling Poker Myths

Along with the rapid growth in popularity of Poker are the myths and beliefs surrounding the card game. Because these ideas are accepted as facts by a lot of players, it has caused a lot of confusion and misconceptions regarding Poker in general.

One of the most prevalent myths is that the big time Poker players use bluffing a lot. Certainly, bluffing is the most well known strategic element in Poker, but the truth is that it is not the key to winning. There is no single key to success in the game.

The fact is that bluffing can only be used in certain situations and only against certain players. For instance, it is a mistake to bluff against tourists and casual players, because their response can be unpredictable; being novices, they will not fold as often as you expect. Why? Because folding will seem, to them, a "cop out".

Also, how you present yourself is key to bluffing. Your style of play will determine how often you will be able to pull it off in Poker. The game variant you are playing should also be considered. No Limit Texas Hold 'em, for instance, lends itself well to bluffs.

Another popular Poker myth is that you have to "psyche out" your opponent. This myth has been bolstered in large part by the media, but for the most part, it is still about getting the best possible hand combinations. If you are new to the game, or playing against veterans, you will have a difficult time reading them, so just concentrate on your cards.

Another myth we can dismiss is that the Poker pros play in a rapid and very aggressive manner. That is not the case (although there are of course exceptions to the rule). Overly aggressive Poker play is mostly seen in maniacs, and they cannot be considered professionals. The pros play using a variety of styles, depending on the game and the opponents.

The fourth Poker myth we can expose is that slow playing will generate more pot money. The truth is that Poker players rarely use this tactic. There are several reasons, among them is that while the pot may swell, the free cards are also increasing the strength of your opponent's hand. Bottom line: how certain are you that you hold the nuts?

A lot of players also believe that you can never win against the very good players and conversely, it is also extremely difficult to win against opponents who are very bad. To dispel the latter Poker myth first; while playing against newcomers, maniacs and passive types can be somewhat unpredictable, it does not mean you cannot win. It is simply a matter of adjusting your style.

For instance, do not employ tactics likes value betting and overcalling when playing against tourists, as they will simply not know how to respond. Just play the normal game and they will make mistakes on their own accord soon enough.

As for playing against the pros, constant playing and strategizing will improve your skills. If you lose to them, that's okay; you will learn from experience.

The more you play Poker the more misguided ideas and concepts you will run across. By studying the facts about the game, you will be able to dispense with the myths and stick to facts about the game.
